Sandström, the productive composer
Sven-David Sandström (1942-2019) is widely regarded as one of Sweden’s most important composers. With an impressive output of over 600 compositions, he showcased his versatility by creating a diverse range of works, including operas, orchestral works, choral pieces, and instrumental music.
Engraving a new German version of an iconic Sandström work
Recently, Gehrmans Musikförlag commissioned Wellfey to embark on a remarkable project: engraving a new German version of Sandström’s renowned mixed choir piece, A New Heaven and a New Earth (composed in 1980), featuring new German lyrics translated by Morten Schuldt-Jensen.
Task and Challenges in Creating the German Version
Part of the task was to ensure that the German lyrics matched the original music, adjusting note values, extenders, and slurs to ensure they were in sync with the new text. Creating the graphic notation was a unique challenge that required custom work.
Having aligned the music, graphic notation, and the new German lyrics, the final score was typeset using Opus, Palatino Linotype, and Berling Nova Sans Pro to match the publisher’s house style.
The result was a score of the same high quality and style as the original but with German lyrics that perfectly matched the music.
A Testament to Sandström’s Musical Legacy
This new version of A New Heaven and a New Earth is a testament to the continued appreciation and recognition of Sven-David Sandström’s musical legacy. Not only does this project showcase his musical contributions, but it also highlights the potential of adapting iconic works into different versions.
